Sporting royalty and TV stars turn out to watch the 'I do's'

30 JULY 2011

She's a world class horsewoman, he's a member of the England rugby team.

It's been described by commentators as "more like a marriage of two sports stars than a royal wedding".

And taking a look at the famous faces passing through the doors of Canongate Kirk for Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall's nuptials, you could almost believe it.

The pews were packed with big names for the world of UK sport who have come to know the couple over the course of their careers.

Among the first to arrive was the manager of Mike's England rugby team, Martin Johnson.

He took his seat along with past manager Sir Clive Woodward – best known for taking England to victory in the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

Other sporting royalty included racing legend Sir Jackie Stewart – the bride's godfather – who was accompanied by his wife Helen.

Champion jockey and former sports personality of the year Tony McCoy was also on the guestlist.

Turning out to see their good friend say "I do", were several of Mike's England rugby team colleagues past and present, including Johnny Wilkinson, Austin Healey and Ben Foden.

He brought along his pop star girlfriend Una Healy – of girl group The Saturdays – who looked thrilled to be attending a royal wedding.

Sports presenter Kirsty Gallacher – elegant in a colourful over the knee dress, a green headpiece and a straw clutch - arrived with her partner Paul Sampson.

And from the world of TV was Coronation Street star Catherine Kelly – pretty in an nude frock and orange wide-brimmed hat.
