She'll carve out her own destiny: William says there's 'no pressure' on Kate to copy Diana

16 NOVEMBER 2010

Sitting side by side, beaming with excitement, Prince William and Kate Middleton looked very much united and completely at ease as they gave the most revealing interview ever by a royal couple.

As well as teasing each other and sharing the highs and lows of their eight-year courtship, the future king and queen addressed serious issues.

Asked whether she was daunted by the Princess of Wales’s legacy, Kate replied: “Obviously I would love to have met her and she is obviously an inspirational woman to look up to on this day.

“It is a wonderful family. The members I have met have achieved a lot, very inspirational. So, yeah, I do.”

The Prince added: “There’s no pressure because, like Kate said, you know it’s about carving your own future. No one is trying to fill my mother’s shoes.

“What she did is fantastic. It’s about making your own future and your own destiny and Kate will do a very good job of that.”

Prompted by interviewer Tom Bradby of ITV News, the royal sweethearts also reminisced about the beginnings of their relationship.

Kate said she "went bright red and scuttled off, feeling very shy", when she was first introduced to the Prince

And she denied stories that she had a picture of him on her wall as a child.

When the Prince joked: "There wasn't just one (pictures), there was about 20", she quipped: "He wishes. No, I had the Levis guy on my wall, not a picture of William, sorry".

Their light-hearted banter provided a good example of why they gel. Summing their rapport, the Prince said: "It's just really easy just being with each other, it's really fun".

During the chat, Kate gave an insight into her relationship with William's family.

She admitted to being "quite nervous" when she first met the Prince of Wales, but he was "very welcoming, very friendly and it couldn’t have gone easier".

When she met the Queen at the wedding of Peter Phillips, the son of the Princess Royal, in 2008, "she was very friendly and it was fine".
