Royal wedding: McQueen designer admits she 'kind of blew it' on the eve of the nuptials

05 MAY 2011

Sarah Burton has finally broken her silence over how it felt to create the most iconic dress of the century.

The Alexander McQueen protégée described the whole experience as "great fun", speaking at the label's concession at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York on Wednesday.

The woman at the helm of one of Britain's biggest fashion houses particularly enjoyed dodging photographers, and ensuring all details of the dress remained shrouded in mystery.

"The most fun I had was trying to hide. We laughed a lot about that," she told the New York Post.

But Kate's couturier admitted that she let the cat out of the bag when she was snapped dashing into the Goring hotel where the bride was staying the night before the wedding.

"She loved the secrecy of it until she kind of blew it by running into the hotel wearing a fur hood, which was from the last collection," the interviewer told WWD magazine.

Guests who had the pleasure of chatting to Sarah at the event later spoke about the designer's praise for the new Duchess and her involvement in the design of the dress.

"She said the Princess was one of the most lovely women she has ever met and she was really low maintenance," one attendee recalled.

"She said the Palace called her and the collaboration between her and Kate was 50-50."

Sarah also revealed that her plans for the immediate future involved taking "a nice vacation".
