Royal wedding: Introducing the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge
29 APRIL 2011
Though the happy couple will see each other simply as husband and wife, their momentous marriage will completely change how the world addresses them.
Following their wedding Kate Middleton and Prince William will become the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
Tradition dictates that the royal men receive a title as a gift chosen and bestowed by the Queen.
William's full title will be His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus. Meanwhile, Kate will be known as Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge.
The most famous previous Duke of Cambridge was George II who held the title in the 18th century.
In becoming Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus, the Queen's grandson now has an association with Scotland and Northern Ireland - in addition to being William of Wales.
The Strathearn title has been extinct since 1943 after the death of Queen Victoria's great-grandson Alastair Windsor, the last holder.
Meanwhile, Carrickfergus is County Antrim's oldest town, situated on the north shore of Belfast Lough.
