Dennis Quaid's on-off marriage might finally be over after 12 rollercoaster years. The actor's wife Kimberly Quaid filed divorce paperwork on Tuesday, TMZ reports, marking the third time that the couple have sought to end their union.

Dennis, 62, confirmed the news to the website, saying: "After careful consideration, Kimberly and I have decided to end our 12 year marriage. The decision was made amicably and with mutual respect towards one another. We will always remain great friends and devoted partners in raising our children."

The couple are parents to fraternal twins Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace, who were born via gestational carrier in November 2007. Dennis is also a father to 24-year-old son Jack, from his marriage to Meg Ryan.

Dennis and Kimberly – née Buffington – were married at his ranch on 4 July, 2004. She first filed for divorce from the star in March 2012, writing in her petition that the marriage had "become insupportable because of discord or conflict or personalities".

Just one month later, she withdrew the papers, but in November of that same year, Dennis filed for divorce, asking for joint legal and physical custody of the children and offering to pay spousal support to Kimberly. The couple went on to reconcile.

The actor was previously married to Meg Ryan

Kimberly is Dennis' third wife; he was married to actress PJ Soles from 1978 until 1983, and to Meg from 1991 until 2001. Earlier this year, son Jack – who made his film debut in the 2012 movie The Hunger Games as Marvel – spoke about his parents' split, which happened when he was just five years old.

"It's one of those weird ages for your parents to get divorced," the actor said on the Allegedly with Theo Von & Matthew Cole podcast. "You're old enough to know what's going on, but young enough to be kind of naïve about it. It's a whole deal."

Jack Quaid recently opened up about his parents' divorce

He said his parents' divorce was made all the more difficult by the fact they were in the spotlight. "It's hard to ignore when you're at a grocery store and you're checking out and you look at [magazines], and there's a photo of them with a little paper rip graphic between them," he said. "It's a hard deal."

Jack added: "I acknowledge fully the way that I grew up was not normal. But at the same time, it was normal in the sense that despite what my parents do, they are still a mum and a dad. It's not like they are their characters at the dinner table or anything like that."
