Sian Williams has revealed that she underwent a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer. The former BBC Breakfast presenter has opened up for the first time about the surgery, admitting that the diagnosis came as a shock.

The 51-year-old said she always thought she was healthy as she "did all the right things".

"I was a green tea drinker, a salmon eater, a runner," Sian told Woman and Home magazine.

"I gradually began to realise how scared I was," said Sian Williams

Her biggest fear was not seeing her two youngest children, who she shares with her second husband Paul Woolwich, grow up.

"For some unfathomable reason, I couldn't stop thinking that I want to be here for my daughter Evie to watch her get married," said Sian.

"My aunt died of breast cancer, and I'd lost my mum to liver and bowel cancer and I gradually began to realise how bewildered and scared I was."

The mum-of-four said her biggest fear was not seeing her children grow up

Sian, who did not reveal when she had the operation, said she was "horrible" to her husband Paul while she was going through her health battle.

"Paul is an extraordinary man," she said. "I have learnt I need to let him know if I need support or an outstretched hand to help me up."

No one outside the family knew that the Welsh star had had a double mastectomy, apart from her children's teacher.

Following her revelation, Sian took to Twitter to write: "Thank you for your messages. I'm positive and hope what I've learned from others might help you too if you're going through times."

Fans will recognise Sian from her 11 years presenting BBC Breakfast. The TV favourite then went on to present Sunday Morning Live, followed by 5 News at 5.
