For the past year Sam Smith has been shedding the pounds and showing off his dramatic weight loss. But a recent photo on Instagram had fans commenting that the Stay With Me singer is completely unrecognisable from his former self.

Sporting a thicker beard than usual, Sam posed on a balcony and displayed a remarkably slender frame. The four-time Grammy winner struck a pensive look and captioned his snap "California daze".

"Is that you?" one fan asked, while another commented, "Please go back to the Sam I fell in love with".

The singer attributed Amelia Freer to his dramatic transformation

The singer first surprised fans last March, when he managed to drop a stone in two weeks. Sam revealed that the secret behind his transformation was nutritional therapist Amelia Freer and her cookbook Eat. Nourish. Glow.

Posting on Instagram, Sam explained that Amelia had "completely transformed" his relationship with food. "It's not even about weight loss it's about feeling happy in yourself," he wrote.

Sam went on to share snippets of his healthier lifestyle, with photos of vegetable-filled meals and regular workouts at the gym. Amelia's collection of recipes is both gluten-free and dairy-free and the author recommends giving up just one thing at a time, whether it's dairy, gluten, sugar, alcohol or caffeine – rather than cutting out lots of foods all at once.
